JOB TITLE: Barn & Animal Care Team Supervisor (part-time)

Manager/Supervisor: Executive Director

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION: The responsibility of the Barn & Animal Care Supervisor is to manage the day-to-day operations of the barn and animal care including include all aspects of animal acquisition, healthcare oversight and provide recommendations on the best future path for NCF/Maybury Farm as it relates to the farm and barn. In addition, the Barn & Animal Care Supervisor is responsible for the education of the barn team (employees and volunteers) including their daily, weekly, and monthly animal care responsibilities. In this position, you will make recommendations to the Executive Director on what NCF/Maybury Farm helping determine if the needs of the community are being met/increasing the number of visitors while working to keep expenses down.

 

POSITION SUMMARY: As part of Maybury Farm and the Northville Community Foundation, this position provides leadership and oversight for growth and management of our barn staff and volunteers. Working in concert with the supervisory team, this position ensures the alignment of programs with the overall goals of the institute and organization.

As the supervisor of the barn team, you are responsible for training and oversight of barn staff and volunteers, animal care practices, and will contribute to the mission of the organization through educational efforts. Through your efforts, you will ensure that audiences are reached through traditional and newly developed programs, while providing local leadership by strengthening public understanding of the role agriculture plays in their lives. You will provide information and opportunities for learning through the use of technology, group meetings, workshops and individual contacts, as necessary.

In this position, you will directly conduct both children's and adult educational programs and train volunteers to conduct children's educational programs. You will be responsible for the gathering and analyzing of data to evaluate the impact of educational efforts. You will work closely with your fellow supervisors and the Executive Director to develop and implement strategies to address risk management in the areas of child safety, finances, volunteer management and educational program development while adhering to the organization's mission and goals.

Operating independently, you will ensure that program development follows established guidelines and meets the goals set for reaching both educational and financial targets. Additionally, you will be responsible for communicating information about newly implemented and existing programs and activities (progress, objectives, target dates, problems addressed, etc.) to the Executive Director and organizational leadership.

 

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES/Barn Team & Animal Care

  • Train/educate a team to work with horses and livestock in an educational setting

  • Plan, organize and carry out educational programs 

  • Provide training on proper completion of farm chores and basic animal care

  • Order supplies, food and equipment/maintain a working inventory and maintain animal care records and databases

  • Coordinate with a veterinarian as necessary 

  • Manage livestock care including birthing, feeding, basic medical care, etc.

  • Coordinate birthing of livestock and be on-call during appropriate season

  • Plan, organize and implement programs that are relevant and meet the needs of the community

  • Plan, organize and carry out programs focusing on specific areas of education for team members, volunteers as well as educational tour guides

  • Provide information and opportunities for learning through the use of technology, mass media, group meetings and individual contacts

  • Provide expertise and information to clientele related to the barn and animal care

  • Support group tours, summer camps, onsite 4-H Club and events at Maybury Farm by assisting with educational programs that involve livestock 

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with employees and volunteers

  • Ensure safety of guests, employees and volunteers

  • Observe guests and volunteer behavior, assess appropriateness of activities, enforce appropriate safety regulation and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques (including asking the violators to leave)

  • Communicate - work with and provide instruction to employees and volunteers

  • Operate independently, with minimal supervision, ensuring that programs follow prescribed guidelines and meet the goals to reach specific audiences

  • Document standard operating procedures for all horse and livestock care

  • Sell and purchase livestock in conjunction with the Executive Director

  • Identify and respond to environmental and safety issues

  • After each barn shift, communicate with team members what took place, update chore sheet

  • Identify and respond to environmental and safety issues

  • Assist guests, employees and volunteers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, lost child or injury)

  • Tractor driving as needed

  • Attend various related local program meetings, committee meetings and community planning activities, as appropriate

  • Oversee program registration processes

  • Follow directions and procedures as established by the Executive Director and the NCF Board

 

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES/Education

  • Lead tours or special Event demonstrations along with other farm educators

  • Follow educational script as outlined by the farm tour team lead; give feedback on areas to improve education at the farm

 

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES/Grants

  • Work directly with the team designated to research/find organizations that might provide grants to NCF/Maybury Farm based on our needs in your particular area

  • Write the grant requests, meeting their dates for submission; update all information (including copies of grant requests, documentation submitted and completion of the master project plan for each grant) into the team shared drive as necessary 

  • When a grant is received, follow up to ensure the project is completed based on submission

GENERAL EMPLOYEE RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Prepare time cards daily, showing the number of hours worked for each task performed - total hours each day as well as provide a total for the week

  • Carefully watch the schedule to ensure that you know the hours you are to work - if you can’t be here for your shift for any reason, contact the Executive Director

 

QUALIFICATIONS FOR JOB: 

  • High school diploma

  • College degree or relevant work experience 

  • Animal Care Experience including birthing, feeding, basic medical care, etc

  • Good communication skills

  • Management experience

  • Outlook/Google/Excel/Word/Powerpoint

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds

 

MEETINGS: 

  • Attend all staff meetings and Maybury Farm events meetings as requested

  • Attend all volunteer meetings

  • Attend vendor or organization meetings when requested

EVENTS: 

  • Work fundraising events as requested 

  • Follow up on and complete any and all Event project plans and the tasks assigned to your area; update the project plan once tasks are accomplished

  • Provide input/ideas to enhance events at the farm

SCHEDULE:

  • 30 hours per week (part-time position)

  • Flexible scheduling available, details will be provided during the interview

 

ATTIRE: Maybury Farm Team T-shirt; closed toed shoes are required, working boots are highly recommended; dress for the weather - we work rain, shine, snow or sleet!

HOURLY RATE: $17 - $20 dependent on level of experience
